Ten suggestions for gripping summer reading

I could easily have written a post about twenty suggestions for gripping summer reading, or even thirty, but I thought it best to keep it short. Each of the novels listed below has been selected either because of its beautiful writing, its compelling storyline, or in some cases, both. So here you are then, my [...]

How lockdown gave birth to a new novel

My guess is that there are quite a number of people out there who have secretly been enjoying lockdown. And who are now feeling a little saddened that things are gradually getting back to normal as restrictions ease and country after country slowly but surely prepares to return to normal life. Of course there are [...]

One difficult aspect about living in Kraków as a half-Pole, yet often feeling like an expatriate even after 20-plus years in this place, is that it’s hard to link up with other English-speaking book lovers such as myself. If I were back in Britain it would be easy. I’d probably be a member of two [...]

A Grumpy Christmas Eve

CHRISTMAS EVE 1992 Kraków, Poland  “We’re closed.” That’s what I said to the woman as the chimes by the front door announced her entrance. I didn’t even bother preceding it with a ‘sorry’. It was quarter to two on Christmas Eve and I was just about to lock up shop and go home. Who can [...]

The Magic of Beautiful Writing

As a writer, it goes without saying that I have always been an avid reader. And the older I get, the fussier I become with my reading, and the harder I am to please. But that does not seem to be the case with many other readers. The astounding success of a number of contemporary [...]

Passion and Paradise Regained

Passion and Paradise Regained

I want to fly backwards in time, and head for my old Art Nouveau apartment – the one my children and I used to share with our newly opened school. It was right in the historic heart of Kraków, within earshot of the quarter-hourly chimes that drifted from an aortic plethora of medieval churches and [...]

Beneath a Scarlet Sky – unsung hero or oversung novel?

The other day I found myself on a Ryanair plane to London, with two and a half blissful hours of peace in front of me. Yippee! - I thought giddily to myself. No internet to interrupt the long, imminent reading session that lay ahead! I snuggled down in my seat (‘snuggling’ is something that’s pretty [...]

Wendy Skorupski

My elixir of life is playing the piano and writing. I couldn’t live without either of those two dimensions! My two latest novels, 'Once Upon a Thousand Hills' and 'Infinite Stranger', are available on Amazon. I had an international upbringing in Cyprus and Vienna, and finished my higher education in England, qualifying as a Music and English teacher. I work in the field of international education, dividing my time between Krakow, Wroclaw, London and Liverpool. But I am mainly based in Krakow, my beloved fairytale city!
